Open or Closed Doors

An unofficial family motto we have had the last several years when we are seeking to discern God’s will is: keeping moving forward until God closes the door. Several months ago it looked like I had the opportunity to pursue a program of study. I was hesitant because, well … I always am. But, was going to move forward until God shut the door. The application process had several – many steps. With each step there was no closed door, so I would continue to the next step and then the next. As each step passed and each hoop was jumped through with no closed door, my heart became more and more attached to the idea of doing this program and attaining this goal.

After this several month long process and now a heart set on it, at the threshold of walking through the door, Monday morning the door slammed shut in my face. I was left confused and even wondered if I had understood God’s leading at all. But God - being so God -very gently reminded me of words He actually had me quoting the last two weeks. “Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand (be carried out).”(Proverbs 19:21, Amplified)

That gave me renewed hope; not for getting into that program but that God had something different to accomplish through me. God was and is not keeping something good from me but He has a better purpose planned. And, not just a smidge better; exceedingly better. Ephesians 3:20 says “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,”

Yes, keep moving forward but if God closes a door, look for His exceedingly abundantly above purpose!!
